It’s winter… the depth of winter. It’s cold. It’s much more comfy indoors than out at this time of year, and that makes it the perfect time to settle down for a creative knitting session.
Hand knits are high fashion
The sweater dress is a contemporary classic. Every man enjoys a big, warm, chunky knit. Right now there’s a growing trend for hand-knit clothing, with some seriously expensive hand knits available from designer brands. Missoni, for example, offers a beautiful striped wool blend knitted dress with an A-line silhouette for £742, Ganni sells a flamingo pink hand knit oversize jumper for £370 and you can pick up a glorious, thick dark blue hand knit woollen cable sweater for £275 on Etsy.
Ouch. It’s expensive. But no wonder, when knitting takes so much time and skill. Luckily once you’ve mastered knitting for yourself, the magical world of the fashion knits is your oyster.
Our lusciously thick Chilla Valley alpaca chunky yarn
So what do you need to get busy creating a collection of beautiful, thoughtful gifts this winter, or to build up your own wardrobe of intricate hand made items? You need wool, and there’s nothing quite so lovely as alpaca yarn. The animals’ fleece is a lot softer than sheep wool, and like Merino wool it isn’t the least bit scratchy. It is also significantly warmer than ordinary sheep wool.
A lot of popular food producers these days talk about their wares being traceable ‘from field to plate’. People like to know where their food comes from. The same goes for our alpaca wool. We carefully shear our own well-kept, well-loved animals and harvest their wonderful coats to make into some of the most gorgeous yarn you can imagine. If you visit us at Chilla Valley Alpacas you can see the very animals your yarn comes from. You can’t really get closer to the source than that!
Our chunky alpaca yarn comes in several gorgeous natural shades. Sandpiper is a lovely , warm, pale camel colour. Mist is a delicate pale grey. Storm Cloud is a rich deep grey and Devon fudge is a warm, pinky-pale brown shade. They’re all made from 70% pure Alpaca yarn plus 30% Shetland yarn.
